Ireland- Medieval Village Trek

Riding in Ravensdale Forest in the lesser visited Cooley Peninsula in Northeastern Ireland is like entering an enchanted forest. Ireland’s greatest epic poem, the Táin Bó Cúailnge, has its roots here, an area rich in history and legend.

Niall Connolly, a fourth generation resident who owns Ravensdale Lodge Equestrian & Trekking Centre, lead me on Jessie, a sweet and strong Irish Cob, through peat bogs, under lush, green beech trees, across overgrown stone bridges left over from a old Irish estate and finally to an ancient stone circle. Cantering, trotting and walking on shaded trails, we climbed to the top of Clermont Carn, a high peak with spectacular views. Here we could see eight of the thirty-two Irish counties and feel the rush of the wind, as it swept over us and down to the colorful port town of Carlingford.

The ride had everything that I love about exploring on horseback- great horses, awesome scenery, history, adventure and of course, a great local guide who shared a special piece of his land and life with me.
